After moving to the USA at couple of Indian emigrants Ashoka and Ashima is born the son who grows up the absolute American. The family tragedy forces it to change the relation to the historical homeland. The drama about roots, continuity and emigration of "Namesake" was shot the prize-winner of the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals by Mira Nair on the basis of the novel by the compatriot - the American writer of the Indian origin Jhumpa Lahiri. 

Young married couple from Bengal Ashok and Ashima Ganguly soon after the wedding moved to the USA. They give to the only son an unusual name Gogol - in memory of tragic events which Ashok endured behind reading the story "Overcoat". Having matured, Gogol takes himself the nickname "Nickname" and feels like the absolute American. The Indian culture is not close to it and is even unpleasant; he avoids own parents and begins the love story with the rich "white" girl. Unexpected and irreplaceable loss forces Gogol to reconsider the relation to traditions of family and value of historical roots.
