In 1752, knights from Spain besieged the trading city of Haarlem in Holland, surrounded by old fortress walls. They try to break through, but the siege is first held by Harlem warriors, and then intercepted by his wife. Kenau Hassler, a tough and independent businesswoman, becomes the city's female leader. She sees the execution of her eldest daughter Gertrude and struggles to protect her youngest daughter Catalina. When famine breaks out in the city, Kenau arrives with a group of bandits at a Spanish camp on a frozen river and robs her food column.

The plot of the film is based on real events that took place in the Dutch city of Haarlem during the war with the Spanish conquistadors. The woman became one of the national heroes of the Netherlands along with Magdalena Mons, who saved the city of Leiden through forced marriage with Spaniard Francisco de Valdez for the sake of saving a large number of local residents. Her feat went down in history and the receivers still honor such an act.
