The action takes place in New York. It's 1864 on the street and two warring parties are going to settle their dispute with a duel. Tarleton Rathcart on one side, Theodore Gibbon on the other. The duel ends tragically for Theodore. Theodore's death leads to a subsequent war between the families. Next, the story shows us a relative of Theodore Benjamin, who has a habit of destroying everything around. Ben has abandoned the family fortune, but maintains strong communication with his parents.

 

Ben is helped out of depression by love for a girl who, for unknown reasons, leaves him. Then Ben gets even worse. Merry Rathcart is a relative of Tarltonon. Merry is not distinguished by exemplary behavior. But the end point is that she falls in love with Ben. Parents are against their communication, because of family feuds. Therefore, they send the girl to study in Paris. Ben and Merry continue to communicate, although not as often as before. Letters from Ben don't reach Mary, and Mary's letters don't reach Ben. Many years later, Merry returns home, where she has to sort out the whole situation.
